Galápagos Horse Friends

About

Galápagos Horse Friends (GHF) began in 2015 when founder Claudia Moreno rescued two neglected mares on Santa Cruz Island. Not long after, an abandoned stallion entered her land and foals were born. What started as concern for a small group of animals soon grew into a calling: to provide dignity, safety and care for horses in the Galápagos.

Over the years, more horses with difficult pasts found a home, and Claudia’s private rescue evolved into a foundation. In 2024, GHF became an officially registered NGO in Ecuador, ensuring that our work will continue to protect animals and nature for years to come.

Just as the Galápagos are known as the Islands of Evolution, our organization has also evolved—from a personal act of compassion into a lasting sanctuary and community initiative.

Mission

Our mission is to ensure that every horse in the Galápagos can live with dignity, safety and proper care, while protecting the fragile ecosystems of the islands. Through rescue and rehabilitation, conservation efforts, education programs and community engagement, we work to transform abandoned horses into living ambassadors of compassion and coexistence.

What We Do

At Galápagos Horse Friends, our work goes beyond rescuing animals. We connect horse welfare with the protection of fragile ecosystems and the well-being of local communities. Our efforts are built on four pillars

Vision

We envision a Galápagos where no horse is abandoned, where communities and nature thrive together, and where compassion for animals directly strengthens the conservation of one of the most extraordinary ecosystems on Earth.
